Welcome to Year 1 – a fantastic year filled with lots fun opportunities to learn new things!
Year 1 is an exciting and interesting year with chances to learn about lots of fascinating things. In Year 1 we will explore seven different themes: Ourselves; Around The World; Out Of This World; A Knight’s Tale; Toy Story; The Enchanted Forest; Shiver Me Timbers. We will be visiting Windsor Castle during our A Knight’s Tale theme. We will also be visiting Kew Gardens later on in the year to learn about different types of plants and how they grow. In December, Year 1 will be busy practising for our Nativity performances.
Year 1 will have PE on Monday and Friday. Make sure you have your full PE kit in school on these days. It is also very important to bring your school reading diary and reading book with you every day. Homework will be set on Monday which will then be collected on the following Monday.
Mathletics – Set every Thursday.
Spelling Sheet – Set every Monday and due in the following Monday.
Handwriting Book – Set every Monday and due in the following Monday.
Your book and diary needs to be in school every day.
Ourselves and Around the World
In this theme, we will learn about parts of the human body and how these links to each of our senses. We will learn lots about countries from different parts of the world and think about how the weather changes throughout the year. We will learn about how transport has changed over time and create our own family trees in our History lessons. We will also listen to and learn a variety of songs from around the world.
Out of this World!
In this theme, we will be creating our very own aliens out of clay. We will also be learning about Vincent Van Gogh and using his artistic style to create paintings of the sky and space. We will be learning about Neil Armstrong and how he was the first man to walk on the moon. We will be imagining fantasy worlds and composing music for each new land.
A Knight’s Tale
In this theme, we will be learning about the features of different castles as well as learning about the Battle of Hastings. We will be making our own model castle in our DT lesson. In our Science lessons will be learning different materials and thinking about the materials that would have been available in medieval times. We will be creating our class marches using percussion and instruments in our Music lessons.
In this theme, we will be learning how toys have changed over time. We will be learning about the creation of the teddy bears and Theodore Roosevelt. We will be making our own toy cars out of plastics bottles and look at the different materials used to make toys. We will also be comparing toys from different parts of the world.
In this theme, we will be learning about parts of plants and growing our own flowers and plants. We will be learning about Francisco De Orellana and how he discovered the Amazon river. In Art we will learn about the techniques used by William Morris before exploring printing using sponges, plants and vegetables.
Shiver Me Timbers!
In this theme, we will investigate and predict which objects float or sink in our Science lessons. In Geography, we will be learning about key geographical physical features including: beaches, cliffs, seas, oceans and rivers, amongst others. We will be making pirate hats in DT by cutting up fabric using templates. We will decorate these fabrics with a variety of materials. During Music lessons we will be learning and singing sea shanties. In History we will be learning about famous pirates such as Blackbeard, Anne Bonny & Mary Reid.
