Our class value is PEACE.
Welcome to Year 2 - your last year in the Infants is a fun-filled, busy year!
There is lots to learn about in Year 2, from the Great Fire of London to how to design and make your very own chocolate bar! In Year 2 we learn through six different themes: The Animal Kingdom; Fire! Fire!; There’s No Place Like Home; Chocolate; It’s a Small World and London Calling. We will visit London Zoo, the Roald Dahl museum and take a turn on the London Eye! Year 2 also take the lead in the nativity, with lots of lines to learn and songs to sing. In the spring we take part in scooter training and Year 2 begin their swimming lessons every Friday.
In Year 2, you will have PE on Tuesdays and Thursdays. Each child will take a PE kit to school at the beginning of each term which will be kept at school. It is also very important that you have your school reading diary and reading book with you every day. Reading books are changed on Tuesdays and Fridays. Homework will be set on Mondays which you will hand in the following Monday. This homework will be an online maths challenge, spelling worksheet activity and handwriting practise.
The Animal Kingdom
You will learn about different types of animals, their characteristics, lifecycles and habitats. You will use an atlas to find the different countries where animals live. You will also make an animal print picture and read about a little boy called Simon who has a whale for a best friend!
The Great Fire of London is an amazing theme which will take you back to London in 1666 when Charles II was King and the city was burnt to the ground by a fire that started in a bakery. You will learn about what London was like in the 17th century, what happened and why the fire started. You will read parts of Samuel Pepys’ diary. At the end of the theme you will make a digital fire picture and carry out some scientific experiments to find out how fire burns.
There’s No Place Like Home
Find out which materials make the best house and design and make your own for the three little pigs to live in. Learn all about homes in the past and how they compare to our homes now. You will try to imagine what life would be like without a telephone or electric lighting.
Fancy being a chocolate inventor like Willy Wonka? In this theme you can! You will try different types of chocolate, design your own chocolate bar and packaging and finally get to make it all in our chocolate workshop! You will also learn about where chocolate comes from and how it changes from bean to bar.
It’s a Small World
In this theme you will learn about where we live, our local area, Great Britain, Europe and the world. We will look at Google Earth and discuss how technology has made communication easier and the world seem ‘smaller’. You will make a pop-up card after exploring different pop-up techniques. We also take a look at micro-habitats by exploring the school garden.
You will learn about life in a big city – the city of London! You will explore the city’s landmarks, learn about some more of its history and learn about the population and culture of the city. You will create a sunset skyline of the city using pastels and charcoal. You will also look at maps to locate London and other UK cities.
Throughout the year we will read lots of different books. The following list shows you the main book for each theme:
- Simon and the Whale by Simon James
- The Owl who was Afraid of the Dark by Jill Tomlinson
- The Three Little Wolves and the Big Bad Pig by Eugene Trivizas
