British Values at Bishop Perrin

At Bishop Perrin school we seek “to create and enforce a clear and rigorous expectation on all schools to promote the fundamental British values of democracy, the rule of law, individual liberty and mutual respect and tolerance of those with different faiths and beliefs.” (DfE 2014)
Our Values support all children, staff, Governors and the wider school community to develop effective relationships throughout the school, and provide the basis for our Behaviour Policy and PSHE curriculum. We use the Values to ensure everyone in the school benefits from high quality Spiritual, Moral, Social and Cultural development.

Each year group has their own Value and we also have one whole school Value which changes on a yearly basis. These Values are displayed around the school, referred to in daily Collective Worship and embedded in our daily life at school.

Promoting Democracy at Bishop Perrin

Democracy is promoted and embedded within the school. Pupils are always listened to by adults and are taught to listen carefully and with concern to each other, respecting the right of every individual to have their opinions and voices heard. Pupils also have the opportunity to have their voices heard through Pupil Conferences and questionnaires, Collective Worship evaluations and feedback. We encourage a respect for democracy by modelling the voting process in everyday school life where appropriate, such as elections for School Council and Green Team, which are chosen solely based on pupil votes. Values Champions are chosen weekly by the children through a voting process. Year 5 and 6 pupils take part in Pupil Parliament every year which is run as a mock election, with children giving speeches and canvasing for votes before all children vote through a ballot box. Each teacher has different ways in which the pupils make their voices heard in the classroom e.g. through Circle Time, discussions and debates and decisions over class rules. We have also had visits and assemblies led from time to time by local politicians as well as our local MP. We try to challenge injustice through our curriculum e.g. we promote Black History Month every year and look at people such as Martin Luther King and Rosa Parks in our Worship Calendar.

Promoting the Rule of Law at Bishop Perrin

The importance of rules/laws, whether they be those that govern the class, the school or the country, are consistently reinforced, particularly during Collective Worship, PSHE and theme work. Pupils are taught the value and reasons behind laws; that they govern and protect us, the responsibilities that this involves and the consequences when laws/rules are broken. We have visits from the local police to further promote and educate in this area.

Our school’s Behaviour Policy enables pupils to distinguish right from wrong. In instances of wrong doing, we challenge children’s bad choices by allowing children time for reflection to accept their responsibility for their wrong doings and support them to make changes for the future by asking the following questions:

  1. What happened?
  2. What did you do wrong?
  3. What should you have done?
  4. How can you make it better now?
  5. What will you do next time?

Our Behaviour Charter is displayed in all of the classrooms and around the school and referred back to regularly. Each class also discusses and sets their own class rules that are clearly understood by all and seen to be necessary to ensure that every class member is able to learn in a safe and ordered environment. All children understand that there is a consequence to breaking school rules.  

Promoting Individual Liberty at Bishop Perrin

Children are taught to be independent and resilient at Bishop Perrin. They are actively encouraged to make choices, knowing that they are in a safe and supportive environment. As a school, we educate and provide boundaries for our pupils to make choices safely, through the provision of a safe environment and an empowering education. Children often choose their own learning partners, they self-select resources in lessons and choose their own challenges in their work. Children are frequently given the freedom of expression in their work (e.g. Science representation of results). Staff actively challenge social stereotypes when planning resources, trips and visitors.

Promoting Mutual Respect at Bishop Perrin

Our core Spiritual Values promote respect towards others and love for all. Children are rewarded, through our rewards system, for practising these characteristics. The opinions of others are discussed and any difference of opinion is open and frank in class debates about current issues. Through celebrating the achievement of others in class and in Collective Worship, children develop a respect for those with interests and skills in other fields.

Children are actively encouraged to develop empathy and forgiveness through focussed PSHE lessons and nurture groups. Staff frequently address friendship or behaviour issues specific to their class through well-structured Circle Time activities.

Tolerance of and respect for those of all faiths, no faith, different culture and lifestyles.

Whilst we are a Church of England school, we draw comparisons with other faiths and cultures regularly, particularly through Collective Worship. This is also promoted through learning about other cultures in theme work, reading books from other cultures and countries, visits from people of other faiths and cultures and visits to other places of worship in RE. We also have links with schools in South Africa and Namibia and staff have taken part in reciprocal visits to these schools.
