Welcome to Year 6 - your final year in primary school is going to be a memorable one!

Year 6 is a fun-packed and busy year, with lots to learn and enjoy. In Year 6 we will learn through six different themes: Tales from the Thames; To Infinity and Beyond; Your Country Needs You; To Boldly Go; Lights, Camera, Action; and Back to the Future. We will take part in Junior Citizen and cycle training; go kayaking on the River Thames in Teddington which is always a lot of fun as well as celebrate the end of Year 6 with an action-packed week at PGL.  Every other year, children in Year 6 will participate in a large scale theatre production during the summer term which will involve lots of singing, dancing and acting.

In Year 6, you will have PE on Tuesdays and Fridays.  Always make sure you have your full PE kit in school on these days.  It is also very important that you have you school reading diary with you every day.  Homework will be set on Mondays which you will hand in the following Monday.  This homework will either be an online maths challenge and reading comprehension, or a maths activity book and a grammar and punctuation task.  You must practise the timestables and your spellings every week.  The timestables test will be on Thursday and the spelling test will be on Monday.  Each half term you will be asked to complete an independent project linked to the theme which you will work on at home over four or five weeks.

THEMES Tales from the Thames You will learn about life along the River Thames and how rivers are important to the people who live near them.  You will create beautiful canal boat artwork, learn about the Anglo-Saxons, investigate and classify animals that live near rivers and compose music to create a river soundscape.

To Infinity and Beyond You will learn about the Earth, the Moon, the Sun and other planets in the Solar System, asking questions about how famous scientists have helped us to understand the orbit of the planets and the length of days, months and years.  You will develop your drawing skills by looking at shade and tone with a range of media as well as learning about musical notation and the first moon landing

Your Country Needs You You will be learning about the causes of World War 2 and the effects on the lives of people living in Britain.  You will find out what it was like to be evacuated, to live with rationing and how people helped the war effort.  You will cook food using wartime recipes and create a sculpture of a World War 2 aircraft.

To Boldly Go You will learn about the Vikings, including who they were, how they lived, how they travelled and about Viking raids and invasions.  You will investigate forces including gravity, air resistance and water resistance and find out about levers, pulleys and gears.  You will also develop your map skills by learning about four and six digit grid references.

Lights, Camera, Action You will experiment with digital cameras to create your own photo montages and display them in a frame that you can make yourself.  You will think about how you can use light to change the way your photographs look.  You will learn about online safety and listen to music from the scores of famous films.

Back to the Future You will learn about life in Britain since the 1950s in technology, fashion, home and school-life, and toys and recreation.  You will explore Pop-Art and the work of Roy Lichenstein and Andy Warhol as well as look ahead to your future at secondary school, how to maintain a healthy lifestyle.

Throughout the year we will read lots of different books. The following list shows you the main book for each theme:

  • The Wind in the Willows by Kenneth Grahame
  • Dangerous Reality by Malorie Blackman
  • Goodnight Mr Tom by Michelle Magorian
  • Scott’s Diaries (available to read online)
